There is never a dull day in Bungoma town, located in western Kenya. With all manner of events including bull fighting, cock fighting, brewing of busaa and eating competitions, there is always something interesting going on.
But locals and guests were not prepared for the scenes to come during a recent eating competition. Local man John Masenya, with with a passion for food, entered a chapati eating competition and broke all records since creation of man. The competition required participants to eat large chapatis with a bowl full of boiled rosecoco beans in record time.
To everyone’s surprise, Masenya emerged as the winner after consuming 30 chapatis in record 35 minutes.
John’s feat is nothing short of remarkable as chapatis, a popular staple food in Kenya are notoriously filling. His win is a testament to his remarkable eating prowess and his love for food.
Speaking after the competition, Omwami declared that he could have done much better if he had enough time to prepare for the contest.
If i knew about this contest earlier, i could have consumed even more. Our family is known for eating. The only reason i let them down today is because i hade a heavy late breakfast.
John Masenya
Food competitions like the chapati eating competition are an important part of the western Kenya culture. and Mr Masenya challenged his next competitors to only show up if they can hit the 50 chapati mark.
As much as these events bring people together, show their skills and have fun, its important to remember the importance of moderation when it comes to food. While John’s win is impressive, it’s important to remember that overeating can have serious health consequences.
All said, its Masenya’s big day and we hearty congratulate him for the great win. We hope that he continues to enjoy his love for food in a healthy and responsible way.
