President William Ruto of Kenya recently caused a stir when he launched the same road project not once, but twice, leaving the constituents of Nyandarua county thoroughly amused.
The first launch event happened 5 years ago in 2018 when he was still deputy president and campaigning for presidency, while the second happened in April 2023 after being voted in.
A tweet indicating that Ruto had launched the road generated lots of buzz after it emerged that he had commissioned it five years ago.
The assembled crowd looked on in disbelief as the President gave a nearly identical speech to the one he had given at the first launch event, complete with the same gestures and inflections.
It wasn’t until after the second launch event that the truth came out: the road project had actually been completed months before the first launch event, rendering both ceremonies completely unnecessary.
Despite the absurdity of the situation, some of the constituents seemed to take the whole thing in stride, with many joking that the road project must be twice as good now that it had been launched twice. And who knows? Maybe the extra attention will encourage even more investment in the country’s infrastructure.
